Coaching should be about more than just following trends. If a coach suddenly starts talking about a topic—whether it’s menopause, strength training, or mental resilience—because they’re personally experiencing it, but they never addressed it before, that’s worth questioning.
Menopause isn’t a clickbait topic. It’s a major physiological shift that affects training, recovery, and performance. Athletes navigating it deserve coaches who understand the science, not just those who are newly interested because they’re feeling the symptoms themselves.
How to Spot a Coach Who Truly Knows Their Stuff
Not every coach talking about menopause or training adaptations for aging athletes is doing it from a place of expertise. Some are just repackaging their personal experience as universal advice. Others may have taken a single course and now present themselves as an authority. So how can you tell who’s truly invested in coaching menopausal athletes versus someone just riding the trend?
-
Have they been talking about this for a while? If a coach has been addressing menopause, strength training for aging athletes, or hormone-related performance shifts for years, that’s a good sign. If they only started talking about it once it became their personal struggle, that’s something to think about.
-
Do they understand the science? Quality coaches learn from research, not just their own experiences. They talk about things like hormone replacement therapy (without fear-mongering), the impact of strength training, and how to adapt workouts based on energy availability.
-
Do they work with athletes like you? A coach who actively works with menopausal and perimenopausal athletes is going to have a much broader understanding than one who is only now figuring it out for themselves.
-
Are they still learning? Menopause research is constantly evolving. A great coach stays up to date and isn’t afraid to say, “Here’s what we know right now, and here’s where we need more research.”
Why This Matters for You
As an athlete, your training, health, and performance shouldn’t be at the mercy of whatever topic is trending on social media. You deserve coaching that is built on a foundation of real knowledge, experience, and continuous learning—not just personal anecdotes.
If you’re looking for a coach who has not only been working with menopausal and aging athletes long before it became a hot topic, but also has been in surgical menopause since 2016, I’d love to work with you. My approach is rooted in science, experience, and a deep understanding of what actually helps athletes thrive at every stage of life. Let’s train smarter together.
