Built to Run is a progressive 12-week strength plan created specifically for runners who want to get stronger, improve durability, and better support the demands of running without spending half their life in the gym.

Each week includes 2 approachable strength sessions built around simple supersets, with most workouts taking about 30-45 minutes. You’ll train the areas runners rely on most, including the hips, glutes, hamstrings, quads, calves, feet, core, and upper body, while gradually progressing from foundational strength into stronger single-leg work and more demanding movement patterns.

This plan is also informed by the same progressive-loading principles used throughout my guides for common runner issues involving the glutes, proximal hamstrings, IT band, patellar tendon, and plantar fascia. The goal isn’t to turn strength training into another full-time sport. It’s to help you build a body with more capacity for the miles you’re asking it to handle.

What’s Inside

• A complete 12-week progressive strength plan designed specifically for runners
• Two strength sessions per week, generally 30-45 minutes each
• Simple supersets that keep workouts focused and efficient
• 5-7 minute dynamic warm-ups built into every session
• Clear sets, reps, rest periods, and progression throughout the program
• Strength work for the hips, glutes, hamstrings, quads, calves, feet, core, and upper body
• Progressive single-leg work to improve strength, balance, and control
• Optional low-level power work later in the plan, with no requirement to tackle intimidating box jumps or big plyometric sessions
• Video demonstrations for every exercise
• Delivered through VDOT for easy scheduling and tracking

Who This Is For

• Runners who know they should strength train but aren’t sure where to start
• Athletes who want a simple, repeatable plan that complements their running
• Masters runners looking to maintain strength and tissue capacity as training demands change
• Runners who have dealt with recurring hip, hamstring, knee, IT band, calf, or foot issues
• Athletes returning to more consistent strength work after time away
• Anyone who feels intimidated by complicated gym programs, heavy lifting plans, or aggressive plyometric work
• Runners who want structure without committing to full coaching

What You’ll Gain

• Stronger hips, glutes, hamstrings, quads, calves, and feet
• Better single-leg strength and control
• Improved core and trunk stability for running
• Greater confidence with foundational strength movements
• Better overall capacity to tolerate the repetitive demands of running
• A more balanced approach to strength that includes upper body without keeping you in the gym forever
• A repeatable strength framework you can return to between race cycles or use alongside your regular running plan

How the 12 Weeks Progress

The program is divided into three progressive phases.

Weeks 1-4: Foundation
Build movement confidence and foundational strength through squats, hinges, step-ups, bridges, calf work, simple upper-body exercises, and core stability.

Weeks 5-8: Capacity
Increase resistance, introduce more single-leg strength, and challenge the hips, hamstrings, and trunk with progressively harder movements.

Weeks 9-12: Strong Runner
Build on the previous eight weeks with stronger unilateral work, heavier loading where appropriate, and optional low-level power exercises for athletes who are ready for them.

Every fourth week reduces volume slightly so your body has time to absorb the work instead of endlessly piling more stress onto your running.

Built for Runners, Not the Weight Room

Running already asks a lot of your body. Your strength program shouldn’t become a second endurance event.

Built to Run focuses on the strength qualities runners actually need while keeping the sessions realistic enough to fit around training, work, family, and the rest of your life. You don’t need to become a powerlifter. You don’t need to fling yourself onto a giant box. You just need consistent, progressive strength work that helps your body handle running better.

How It Works

After purchase, you’ll receive an invitation to your VDOT training calendar.

Your full 12-week program will already be loaded with workouts, instructions, sets, reps, progression, and exercise demonstration videos.

Open the app, complete your session, check it off, and get back to running.

Two days a week. Twelve weeks. Stronger miles.
